Sky, Eurosport nets Bundesliga rights until 2021

   | 10 June 2016

Just as it has done with the English Premier League, pay-TV giant Sky has swooped to win the lion’s share of rights to show the German Bundesliga until 2021.

sky bundesliga 10 JUne 2016Following a successful outcome to the Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL) tender process, which it says left it as the disputed home of football in Germany, Sky will show 572 live matches a season from 2017/18 to 2020/21 across all platforms, meaning that it will continue to broadcast 93% of all live matches, including full live coverage of Bundesliga matches on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. For the first time, Sky will also become the exclusive live broadcaster for all matches of the Bundesliga 2 regular season, with an additional live match on Monday evenings.

Yet gaining such rights comes at a cost. Under the new agreement with the DFL, Sky will pay 32% more in the 2017/18 season - the first year of the new contract - than in the final year of the existing agreement, which concludes at the end of the 2016/17 season. Over the four years of the new agreement, the average rights cost per annum will be €876 million, compared to an average of €486 million per annum under the existing contract.

Commenting on the deal, Jeremy Darroch, group chief executive, Sky, said: “We are delighted to win the Bundesliga contract. This is an important step to building our business in Germany and maximising the significant opportunity for growth. We are pleased with the progress we are making and we are well placed to bring Sky to even more customers in Germany and create value for our shareholders.”

Complementing Sky will be Eurosport, which won the secondary rights package and will show its first ever exclusive live Bundesliga matches in Germany.

Under its four-year deal, the Discovery-owned firm will air 40 live Bundesliga matches per season, presented exclusively from 2017/18, and has exclusive rights to show regular Friday night prime time, selected Sunday afternoon and top Monday night Bundesliga matches on Eurosport paid platforms in Germany.

Matches will also be available exclusively live to fans on Eurosport Player, the company’s live and on-demand digital service.

“When you consider our goal is to secure more must-have and highly relevant sport content, Bundesliga rights within Germany and the Olympic Games across the continent are at the very top of the pyramid,” commented Eurosport CEO Peter Hutton. “We look forward to continuing our strong partnership with the DFL and showcasing football to the highest standards for fans in Germany.”
