Pay-TV holds even as Telefónica’s global footprint weakens

Although Spanish telco Telefónica has seen profits halved during the first half of the year, its video operations keep moving forward, with nearly 8.5 million global pay-TV households.

telefonicaBrexit, Latin America’s financial instability and growing competition have all been pointed to as reasons for the drop in profits, which are down 42.1% year-on-year for the period between January and June 2016, reaching €1.24 billion compared with €2.14 billion during the same period last year.

“It has to be highlighted that currencies’ depreciation have affected the company’s financial results, especially regarding the UK’s pound, the Argentinian peso and the Brazilian real,” pointed out Telefónica in its Q2 2016 report.

However, pay-TV operations continue to look healthy in both Spain and Latin America, with the exception of Brazil.

According to Telefónica’s report, almost half a million subs have been added globally during the last year (4.9% growth), as the telco has 8.42 million pay-TV accesses worldwide.

On a country level, Spain continues to be Telefónica’s largest pay-TV operation, with 3.8 million subs and growing by 4% since last year.

The four LATAM Spanish-speaking markets in which Telefónica delivers pay-TV added 2.9 million households to the pile after growing by 9.7%. While Chile and Venezuela have reported almost no growth, Peru and Colombia’s operations keep growing at a good pace.

On the other hand, Brazil’s pay-TV business is weakening although it’s not exclusive to Telefónica. The telco has 1.7 million subscribers there, 1.5% less than a year ago.
