While its long expected move to launch a connected set has been its supposed video story for a while now, Apple has quietly got on with boosting its TV services and has now added PBS to its content bouquet.
Comprising over 350 member stations, PBS reaches nearly 120 million people through television and over 29 million people online through content spanning science, history, nature, drama and current affairs.
Under the term of its deal with the CE giant, full-length episodes and clips from PBS programmes will be available for Apple TV users including new prime time shows as well as those from the PBS archives. New national and local content will be updated daily.
Apple TV viewers can personalise their PBS experiences by creating a profile and identifying their local PBS station, which will provide them access to their favourite locally produced shows along with signature PBS programmes. Many will be available for viewing within 24 hours of their broadcast.
"Given the tremendous success of our PBS Video apps for iPad and iPhone, we know PBS already has a large number of fans enjoying our content through Apple devices. Apple TV is a natural place for us to be," commented Jon Brendsel, vice president of product development, PBS Digital. "While PBS stations are the first place to enjoy public television programming, bringing our programming to Apple TV is another way we're allowing viewers to engage with their local station when and how it's most convenient for them."
