Antel to invest over $700 million in FTTH

Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 23-10-2013

Uruguay's Antel has announced that it will invest over $1,100 million until 2017 in order to modernise the country's telecoms infrastructure.
Most of the budget will target Uruguay's fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) project, which aims to improve  Internet and TV services throughout the country.
According to the national newspaper La República, the telco will invest $727 million in the access network, spending $164 million during this year and next, and then $130 million per year until 2017. The FTTH project aims to bring the fibre network to every town with over 3,500 inhabitants before 2015. In addition, Antel intends to improve the wireless network of Punta del Este and Montevideo and extend 3G coverage in the interior of the country.
Over half a million homes can now be connected to FTTH in Uruguay, and Antel expects to reach 250,000 actual connections before the end of the year. Carolina Cosse, Antel's president, said that the company's goal is to connect the network to 100% of potential customers.
The rest of the budget will go towards improving the capacity of fixed and mobile Internet networks, as well as meet the increasing demand for mobile communications.
