Argentina's public satellite provider Arsat and cinema institute Incaa have launched Odeón, a free video-on-demand (VOD) platform for online distribution of national content.
Incaa has been responsible for rights management, graphic design and content selection, while Arsat has been in charge of technological development, data storage, commercial management and building a streaming service.
The platform will kick off with 700 hours of Argentinian content (including titles like León, Pájaros Volando, Juan y Eva, Esperando la Carroza, Carancho, Historia de un Clan and Lo mejor de Fútbol para Todos), which is to be streamed through the Internet both in SD and HD.
Odeón, which was announced last March, targets the 60% of Argentinian homes that have access to the Internet through a computer, and particularly the 48% of the population that regularly watches online video.
According to Arsat and Incaa, the platform aims to increase cultural exchange across the country while facing challenges of technological convergence.
“Through this new platform, a new media to access Argentina's audiovisual production is created, looking to protect copyright and to deliver national cinema to the population,” stated a spokesperson from Arsat.
