Over half of Spanish viewers will follow news about the upcoming elections on TV, trusting the traditional screen ahead of the Internet and the social networks.

A Kantar report prior to the election campaign, which kicked off today (4 December), shows 53.8% of viewers will get their political information from TV, while 21.9% will choose online sources like newspapers or social networks and 11.4% prefer radio.

As would be expected, online media gains importance the younger the audience is, with nearly 60% of those Spanish people under 35 saying they will use Facebook and Twitter to follow the campaign.

Across every media platform, political information will be closely followed by over seven in ten of those surveyed, while 28% show no interest.

For the first time, candidates are openly debating on TV, something which is highly valued by 72% of viewers. In addition, almost 55% consider that these debates will influence their voting decision.

“Even though this will be the most Internet-focused campaign in history, television appears to be key for the events prior to the election,” said Lluis Fajó-Vilas, political analyst, Kantar Media.
