As both companies continue their attempts to catch up with Facebook in the video stakes, Periscope is to enable Twitter to integrate video streams for users of Apple iOS devices so it is possible to watch broadcasts without leaving the Twitter app.

RTVN 13 Jan 2016 periscopeIn the past whenever a broadcast was shared on Twitter, users had to tap the relevant link to open the Periscope app. Now Periscope has added the ability to replace the links with the broadcast itself, auto-playing right within the Tweet. When users tap to open the video, it goes full-screen and shows Periscope comments and hearts from other viewers. Twitter users do not need the Periscope app or even a Periscope account to make the functionality work.Having been in operation for just over a year Periscope claims that over 100 million broadcasts have been created using its technology.

Commenting on the announcement and what it means for the social TV space, Periscope said: “For broadcasters, this means you can reach the massive Twitter audience. And for everyone on Twitter, there’s now a richer experience in your home timeline, search results, and on anyone’s profile who’s shared a Periscope.”

Periscope was keen to note that while they new capability was initially exclusive to iOS, it had plans to roll the feature out on all second-screen platforms — in particular Android.
