Sky Deutschland continues to grow, offers new crime drama

As it announces plans to broaden its drama bouquet, pay-TV operator Sky Deutschland has considerably increased its turnover in Q3 2013 and reduced its losses.
Turnover rose by 19% to €392.7 million compared with Q3 2012, while the EBITDA climbed by 57% to €29.2 million. The loss dropped from €16.5 million to €14.2 million.
The number of direct subscribers grew by 76,000 to 3.53 million. The increase was slightly lower than in the same period last year in which 79,900 new customers were recorded. However, the number of subscribers acquired through third-party platform operators rose considerably, increasing by 155,800 to 280,000 – mainly because of former LIGA total subscribers from Deutsche Telekom who have opted to receive Sky's Bundesliga offering through Telekom following the telco's loss of the Bundesliga rights.
Sky expects the EBITDA to be positive throughout the whole year 2013 and continue to grow strongly thereafter. No details were given, however, on the crucial question as to when the broadcaster expects to reach black figures below the line.
Sky Deutschland has also announced that it will act as co-producer of a TV series for the first time. In collaboration with ProSiebenSat.1 subsidiary Red Arrow, the pay-TV operators will produce 100 Code which will be broadcast in early 2015.
The international crime series is created by Oscar-winning writer and producer Bobby Moresco.
Through the agreement, Sky will secure the exclusive broadcast rights for pay-TV and free-to-air TV across all platforms as well as for mobile and on-demand. With the move, Sky follows the example of US broadcaster HBO that has made a name for itself over the years through a raft of originally produced series.
