Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) will broadcast Nine Entertainment’s metropolitan content into Queensland, Southern NSW and Victoria following a five-year regional TV affiliation agreement between the two parties.
The deal, which comes into effect from 1 July, brings to an end Nine’s previous long allegiance with regional broadcaster WIN, which recently failed in its legal attempt to prevent Nine streaming content on its 9Now video-on-demand (VOD) service.
SCA channels will now carry Nine’s branding and broadcast its free-to-air Australian and international content, which includes The Voice and The Block, as well as all NRL and cricket broadcasts.
The agreement will see SCA pay Nine an affiliation fee of 50% of its television revenue, and SCA provide sales services for Nine’s NBN channel in Northern NSW and NTD9 in Darwin. This will give regional advertisers a central point of contact for Nine’s content across the Eastern seaboard.
“This is a great outcome for Nine and SCA. We are confident that, together, we will offer a premium viewing experience for audiences and a best in class platform for advertisers,” said Hugh Marks, CEO, Nine Entertainment.
SCA CEE Grant Blackley said he was “excited” about the “landmark long-term agreement” with “a media company which has so successfully informed and entertained Australian audiences for many decades”.
