Significant growth in IPTV and major investment in ultra-fast broadband, connecting three million homes and businesses, have been the standouts in the Q1 2016 results for Swisscom.

Swisscom 4 may 2016For the first quarter ended 31 March 2016, the incumbent telco posted a net revenue of CHF2.893 billion, edging downwards year-on-year by 0.3%, but net income grew 3.7% compared with March 2015 to CHF351 million.

Yet far more notable growth was seen in the Swisscom TV IPTV business where access lines in Switzerland grew annually by 13.8%, to 1.37 million, representing net additions of 36,000 in the first quarter.

Two-thirds of these used the cloud-based Swisscom TV 2.0 service. In addition, in April 2016 Swisscom TV launched a new Ultra HD TV box that will not only deliver 4KTV on the SRF zwei channel but also supports high dynamic range (HDR).

The number of fixed-line retail broadband connections rose by 60,000 or 3.1% year-on-year to 1.97 million, up 10,000 in the first quarter. In the fixed network business, the growth in TV and broadband connections more than offset the reduction in the number of fixed-line phone connections of 153,000, a drop of 47,000, in the first quarter).

“We are well on track. In view of the difficult market conditions, I am satisfied with our business performance,” said Swisscom CEO Urs Schaeppi, commenting on the first quarter results. “We gained many new customers with Swisscom TV, broadband connections and Fastweb. Revenue remained more or less stable and EBITDA increased thanks to lower costs. The market is becoming increasingly saturated and growth in areas such as mobile telecommunications is becoming more difficult.
