Mediapro goes for FTA sports in Spain Gol-logo

Once more, Mediapro has decided to enter Spain’s free-to-air (FTA) scenario with a dedicated sports channel through DTT, which is currently airing but hasn’t officially premiered.

gol logoGOL, exclusively produced by Mediapro, has started airing the FIBA basketball under-18 World Cup, but the company hasn’t received final permission to launch the network yet, which is why it is only in test mode.

The DTT network was launched on a frequency slot owned by Unidad Editorial, in which 13tv aired until it got its own DTT licence during the last public bid.

“GOL intends to become a reference channel in free-to-air sports, a network through which to experience the passion of sports,” said Mediapro in a release. Although it won’t air first-line competitions such as La Liga or the Champions League, it will broadcast football, basketball, tennis and fighting, among other sports.

The first programmed competitions include the freestyle X Austin Games, Germany’s DTM car race, European Cup beach-volley and several tournaments from the World Padel Tour.

Mediapro has re-used the GOL name for the new channel, reminiscent of its own pay-DTT network, which closed down prior to beIN Sports’ launch last year.
