BBC posts solid financial sales in Australia, NZ Sherlock_Special_First_Picture

BBC Worldwide has posted solid sales growth across Australia and New Zealand after a year’s availability on pay-TV platforms Foxtel and Fetch TV, plus an increase in sponsorship deals.

Sherlock Special First PictureSales revenue was £79.1 million in the year ending 31 March 2016, up 5.3% if currency fluctuations are accounted for. In Australia BBC channels have witnessed sponsorship growth of 19.9% year-on-year.

During the year, BBC First reached more than three million viewers, kids’ channel CBeebies doubled its audience ratings, and BBC UKTV increased its reach in both Australia and New Zealand.

Shows ranged from BBC Worldwide’s top grossing title globally, Sherlock: The Abominable Bride, and the locally-commissioned and produced period drama Banished, written by Jimmy McGovern.

Six new formats are airing in 2016: You’re Back In The Room, for Channel Nine and TVNZ; a first series of Coast and Mastermind for TVNZ; Coast on The History Channel; and The Great Australian Bake Off on Foxtel’s Lifestyle Food.

The commercial arm of the British broadcaster has also upped its live entertainment offering down under, with the first official Doctor Who Festival in Australia, and sell-out tours by wildlife presenter Steve Blackshall, and YouTube stars Joe Sugg and Caspar Lee. The BBC also staged Proms concerts in Melbourne for the first time in April.

In 2015, BBC Worldwide launched a global content marketing team, BBC StoryWorks, in Sydney.
