Pay-TV disappoints at DISH Network

In what at first glance looked like a strong third quarter, DISH Network Corporation has revealed a softening in its pay-TV business lines.
For the quarter ended 30 September 2015, the satellite firm reported revenue totalling $3.73 billion compared with $3.68 billion for the corresponding period in 2014. Subscriber-related revenue increased to $3.7 billion from $3.65 billion in the year-ago period. Net income attributable to DISH Network totalled $196 million for the 2015 quarter, compared with net income of $146 million from the period a year earlier.
In a break with previous reporting, periods, DISH has included all of its Sling TV live, linear streaming over-the-top (OTT) Internet-based television services in its total pay-TV metrics, including pay-TV subscribers, pay-TV ARPU and pay-TV churn rate numbers.
In Q3, pay-TV ARPU totalled $86.33 compared with $84.39 in Q3 2014 as DISH activated approximately 751,000 gross new pay-TV subscribers, compared with around 691,000 in the prior year's third quarter. Yet net pay-TV subscribers declined approximately 23,000 in the third quarter, almost double that of a year ago. The company closed Q3 with 13.909 million pay-TV subscribers, compared with 14.041 million a year earlier. 2015 pay-TV subscriber churn rate was 1.86% versus 1.67% for Q3 2014.
