DirecTV, CNT gain in Ecuador's growing pay-TV market
With over three in ten Ecuadorians subscribing pay-TV, DirecTV and CNT lead the industry and have experienced most of the growth in 2015.
Although the Ecuadorian market is slowing, it continues to show growth, reaching 1.35 million households by December 2015.
According to annual figures published by Arcotel, the national telecom authority, the public telco Corporación Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (CNT) added nearly 140,000 subs during last year to its direct-to-home (DTH) platform, reaching 351,000 total subscriptions. Indeed, its market share grew from 22% in 2014 to 26%.
But the market's largest operator is still DirecTV - which also provides satellite TV - with nearly 460,000 subscriptions as of December 2015. More than a third of Ecuador's subscribers are choosing the AT&T-owned company.
With almost 208,000 subs, Grupo TV Cable is the country's third player, owning a 15.38% market share, followed by Univisa (3.52%), and Conecel and EcuadorTelecom, which commercialise América Móvil's Claro, and reach a combined 4.78% share.
The rest (over 15% of subscriptions) is shared among local cable and satellite operators.
