The CW to debut Supergirl, green lights new series
The CW Network has presented its 2016-17 programming schedule, along with plans to offer free streaming of its content.
“We have four terrific additions to our schedule next season, and five great anchors at eight o’clock, every night of the week,” said Mark Pedowitz, president, The CW. “The CW has become known as the home of the best, most creative series on broadcast television, in a range of genres that appeal to the most balanced audience of any broadcast network, and the series we have for next season will absolutely continue to fit that bill.”
Supergirl will move to the CW this autumn, joining its popular roster of DC heroes. There are also three new series lined up for next season: The smart, charming comedy No Tomorrow; a high-stakes drama called Frequency; and, for midseason, a subversive take on small-town life, dubbed Riverdale.
The CW also announced that starting in autumn, the CW app will be available to more than 80 million devices on mobile, tablet and all major OTT platforms, allowing users to stream The CW’s primetime series for free and without need for authentication.
Also launching later this year is a new vertical on CWTV.com, CW Good, which the network said “highlights the causes that The CW’s stars and fans are passionate about”. That will launch in August. It will be highlighted by the new series My Last Days, a docuseries about living, as told by those who are dying. Hosted by Jane the Virgin star Justin Baldoni, the show features the stories of six real-life superheroes who remind us that having a limited amount of time doesn’t mean you can’t make a profound impact on others.
The CW will launch its 2016-17 broadcast season in October, with premiere dates to be announced later.
