Kudelski adds watermarking to security portfolio with NexGuard acquisition

As it attempts to broaden its breadth in the security sphere, the Kudelski Group, owner of the Nagra security line, has bought digital content watermarking solutions provider NexGuard Labs.

Formerly, and perhaps better known as, Civolution BV, the Netherlands-based NexGuard has offices in Los Angeles, New York, London, Dubai and Rennes (France) and is a leading provider of forensic watermarking technology and solutions for protecting media content against illicit redistribution.
Watermarking has come to be hot over the last year or so as content owners battle to stem the tide of unauthorised transmission over IP networks.

Civolution's flagship system is NexGuard which allows copyright holders to identify the source of unauthorised distribution even after a film leaves the encrypted digital domain of a DRM service. Crucially for markets such as Asia and MENA where redistribution is a huge problem, ExpressPlay uses the Marlin DRM and supports early-window release especially in video-on-demand (VOD) packages.

Kudelski adds that the use of watermarking technology has become a major requirement from content owners, especially regarding 4KTV, high dynamic range (HDR) and live sports events distribution. To this end, it says that the buy-out is designed to expand its portfolio of end-to-end content protection security solutions, enriching the existing offer to content owners and pay-TV operators. NexGuard is seen as being able to reinforce the Kudelski Group’s existing watermarking technology, anyMARK, and will be available on all Kudelski Group digital television products.

Commenting on the deal, André Kudelski, chairman and CEO, Kudelski Group, said: “The acquisition of NexGuard further strengthens our content protection offering and represents a key milestone in executing our growth strategy in security.”
