French telco SFR has announced it will be "the first operator in Europe to offer a set-top box based on Android 4.2, giving access to Google Play services on television".
Priced at an additional €3 per month, the hybrid box is available from 19 November and is set to enrich the TV experience, mixing TV with the best of web.
Customers will be able to continue receiving up to 25 channels of terrestrial broadcast TV along with their associated catch-up services as well as Internet radio channels and SFR Video Club that lines-up more than 3,000 pieces of VOD content.
But the Android box also includes Google services such as Google Voice Search, YouTube and Google Play Movies, and other applications from the Google Play Store.
The new STB mainly targets customers who can't receive ADSL TV, but it also can be used by IPTV customers seeking more Web services, or as a second TV home gateway as the box is compatible with all others.
