Telefónica expands LATAM satellite hub to support OTT growth

Telefónica has invested $100 million in its Peru-based satellite hub for Latin America to support its own growth plans for over-the-top (OTT) services.
telefonica satelite peruManaging 20 pay-TV operations and satellite Internet connections for 12 Latin American countries, the Lurin centre also takes care of online video and OTT demands across the region. Indeed, Telefónica has said that the refurbished centre will have a decisive role in the expansion of its Movistar Play streaming video service which will be available in 12 countries before the end of the year.
“Lurin is the pay-TV core in Latin America. From here, we distribute pay-TV services for more than six million households in addition to 12 operators that are using our platform,” explained Javier Manzanares, president, Telefónica Peru. “Developing this satellite hub has been possible thanks to our team of Peruvian engineers, which guarantee the quality of our service 24/7 throughout the year.”
In addition to satellite operations, the Lurin centre also manages the submarine fibre cable that connects Peru and the Andean region to the rest of America.
