Spotify plots first original video series Russell_simmons

Swedish music streaming powerhouse Spotify has teamed with actor Tim Robbins and Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons to create an original video series.

russell simmonsAccording to the Financial Times, the films will launch in the middle of this year to users in the US, UK, Germany and Sweden.

Spotify, which has more than 75 million active users, said late last year that it would get into the video game, carrying content from the BBC, ESPN, Vice Media and others. This is the company’s first foray into original series, which it said will initially focus on video that is “rooted in music, pop culture and animation”.

The Simmons series, Rush Hour, will feature two hip-hop artists collaborating on a new track and then performing it in downtown Los Angeles at the eponymous time. Meanwhile, Life in Short will have episodes that are less than two minutes long, highlighting an important aspect of an artist’s life, according to FT.

“We are working with artists, producers and partners who understand that the Spotify audience has a strong connection to artists and wants to go deeper into their worlds, see their performances and expressions, and hear their stories,” Tom Calderone, Spotify’s global head of content partnerships, told the outlet.
