Sports Illustrated has launched wall-to-wall coverage on SI.com and across its social channels on Twitter (@SINow), Facebook (Sports Illustrated) and Instagram (@SportsIllustrated) to celebrate the life of Muhammad Ali, who died this week at the age of 74.
life'The Greatest', Ali was the 1974 Sportsman of the Year, and in 1999 he was named Athlete of the Century by SI. The organisation also renamed its Sportsperson of the Year Legacy Award the Muhammad Ali Legacy Award, in his honour. George Foreman, Larry Holmes, Shaquille O'Neal and a host of athletes and friends turned out for the dedication. Jack Nicklaus was the inaugural winner of the Muhammad Ali Legacy Award and was honoured at a ceremony in New York.
“Muhammad Ali was a singular force of athletics, humanitarianism and social equality unlike anyone in our history. He was a fighter, and a champion, yet many of his most important victories came outside the ring. His legacy defines the very best of who we are and aspire to be,” said Paul Fichtenbaum, Sports Illustrated group editor.
Sports Illustrated managing editor Chris Stone added: "Nobody simultaneously better embodied the idea that sports are both incredibly fun, and yet cannot completely shield hard, sometimes ugly truths. Go through any photo gallery of Ali, or any collection of video clips – as many of us no doubt have been doing since we learned the news – and he leaves no doubt that there will never be an entertainer again in his mould. But what made him the transformative figure that he is, the most important athlete of our lifetime, was his role in reminding us of the very real nexus between sports and those hard truths – race, religion, to name a few – that we still struggle with today,”
